Dr. Olivia Agyekumwaa, who leads the FDA’s Tobacco and Substance Abuse section, has warned men about the serious health consequences of drug abuse.

She stressed that using drugs such as tramadol, marijuana, and cocaine can result in lasting medical problems, including impotence, which prevents men from sustaining an erection.
Dr. Agyekumwaa noted that many young men take these substances recreationally or to enhance stamina and sexual performance, but she emphasized that this is a dangerous misconception with potentially permanent effects.
“These drugs harm the brain, nerves, and blood vessels—all vital for sexual function. Continued use can impair these systems and lead to sexual dysfunction,” she explained.
She also highlighted the emotional toll of drug-related impotence, noting that affected men may experience shame, anxiety, and despair, which can affect relationships and increase the risk of depression.
To combat these issues, Dr. Agyekumwaa urged youth to avoid abusing substances and stressed the FDA’s commitment to raising awareness about the associated health risks.
Her central advice: short-term thrills are not worth the lasting damage drugs can cause to your health and future well-being.
